When I'm cold, wet, exhausted, and asking myself why on earth I decided to race 5000nm across the Atlantic in a 70ft yacht crammed in with 21 crewmates, it'll really push me on knowing that I'm helping making a difference. I have already raised over £1900 for the British Red Cross since 2015 by taking part in walking and hiking challenges, and I can't wait to take to the seas for this incredible charity and help raise funds and awareness of the work that they do.
My aim is to raise a total of £2500 for this amazing cause by the end of the race in 2018. Here's an idea of how much good that could do in the UK and across the world:
- £5 could provide 4 people with clean drinking water
- £20 could buy a first aid kit for UK Emergency Response teams
- £45 could give an Afghan mechanic the tools they need to maintain community wells in Afghanistan
- £150 could help give 11 families the means to grow their own nutritious crops and ensure a healthy diet in a country like Lesotho
- £500 could provide food and drink for 100 vulnerable people displaced by an emergency such as flooding
